Do we get to meet you beforehand?
My Full and Intermediate package provides for a pre-wedding photoshoot, although I will always meet clients before hand for the reduced package too. Often we will meet several times, until we are both confident in what will happen on the day, and afterwards. An added bonus is that you get to see my photographs of you before the big day.
I regard face to face meeting as absolutely critical.
How long do you spend taking the photographs on the day?
This is variable and dependant on the type and style of wedding and the package opted for by the client.
How many photographs will you take?
It is very difficult to put a number on this. I normally estimate somewhere between 200 – 600, depending on the type and style of wedding and package opted for. Other factors can also affect this such as weather, choice of venue and ceremony etc. I don't take a "machine gun" approach just firing off the shutter in the hope that proportion are OK, this is completely the wrong approach and unprofessional. I like the shots to all look as good as they can possibly be, and this means careful exposure and composition.
How many photographs make up the album?
This will depend on the package opted for, and the type and style of album. Most albums are designed at hold between 40 and 100 photographs, depending on size. Obviously I take many more than this on the day so clients have to choose their favorite shots to go in the album. With the Full package I supply loose the remaining prints.
Are you married yourself, and what age are you?
Yes, recently married in 2005 and I'm 30 years old. I like to feel these two facts offer me a considerable advantage in current wedding photography trends.
How long have you been a serious photographer?
I was fascinated with photography from a very early age and I used to play around with old box cameras from junk shops and make my own pin hole cameras, so I would say about 20 years.
Do you have an assistant?
Yes, my wife.
Do you shoot Black & White and colour?
Today, Black and White photography is probably more popular than ever since the advent of mainstream and affordable colour photography in the late 1960's, early 1970's. There is good reason for this. All black and white prints are handmade in the darkroom and as such poses the “real black and white” look of proper silver monochrome prints
I shoot both. Some shots definitely work a lot better in monochrome and some have to be colour.
Can we have reprints?
Yes, there is a charge for these. Please see the pricing page.
What about albums and reprints for friends and relations?
There is a selection of albums and reprints available for purchase by friends and relations. Please see pricing page. If you have opted to have your photographs on the website, your friends and relations can look here to decide which they would like and can order on line. Photographs can then be mailed direct to them.
What happens to the negatives?
It is normal practice that the photographer retains the copyright over the photographs and as such properly archives the negatives.
Do you shoot more than one wedding in a day?
No.
What equipment do you use?
I use both Hasselblad medium format and Nikon 35mm cameras.
The Swedish made Hasselblad is regarded as the Rolls Royce of stills cameras, with incredibly high quality lenses. It is also very versatile and can be used simultaneously with various different films. Hasselblad has been the choice of many of the world's very greatest photographers.
Nikon is usually seen as the doyen of 35mm camera manufacturers. I insist on using only Nikon's own range of Nikkor lenses (although there are cheaper spurious makes on the market).
I also use some lighting over and above the standard portable flash units on the camera. This is helpful in achieving the best quality shots in the event the weather is poor or light is low.
How are the prints made?
I operate my own darkroom where I process and print all the Black and White photographs. By operating my own darkroom, this gives me a lot of flexibility and the attention Black and White needs, especially at the printing stage.
Colour prints are genuine chromagenic, or C-Type, prints. These are the highest quality colour prints and generally printed on the highest quality Kodak Endura or Fuji paper. I do not use inkjet or dye-sub printers, which produce prints with no known lifespan and are commonly used with a wide variety of different papers and inks with a very variable quality and archival record. As the client, there is no way of knowing what grade or quality of inks and papers are used in such processes..
Do you carry back up equipment?
Yes, of the same caliber.
Where are you based and do you travel?
I am in the midlands, and as such I am able to travel all over the country very easily. For assignments outside the midlands I make a small charge for travel (see pricing page)
Are you insured?
I carry a full professional indemnity insurance policy.
